Hi foodies, we’re about to dive into the world of Filipino cuisine with a homey, flavor-packed dish known as Garlic Fried Rice, or Sinangag. This is not just any fried rice. It’s a love letter to garlic – a star ingredient that makes this dish unforgettable.
Garlic Fried Rice, known locally as “Sinangag,” is a breakfast staple in the Philippines. It’s typically served alongside an array of dishes including meats, fish, eggs, and pickled vegetables, creating a meal that’s bursting with diverse and compelling flavors. But the beauty of this dish is that it’s pretty versatile. You can have it for lunch, dinner, or even as a midnight snack. The aromatic garlic combined with the fluffy rice provides a comforting and satisfying base that’s so easy to fall in love with. Trust me, once you’ve had a taste of it, you’ll want to have it all day, every day.
What’s more, garlic fried rice showcases the rich culinary heritage of the Philippines. Each bite takes you on a journey through the vibrant and dynamic tapestry of Filipino cuisine. The interplay of flavors and textures is a testimony to the ingenuity and creativity of Filipino cooking. Whether you enjoy it as simple comfort food or elevate it with gourmet accompaniments, garlic fried rice is a dish that truly embodies the heart and soul of the Philippines.
Moreover, Sinangag represents a sense of familiarity and comfort. Many Filipinos have fond memories of waking up to the smell of garlic frying in the kitchen, signaling the start of a new day. It’s a dish that many expatriates crave when they’re far from home, as it evokes a sense of nostalgia and connection to their roots.
Garlic rice is also frequently featured in traditional Filipino celebrations and gatherings. Whether it’s a casual Sunday brunch or a grand fiesta, you can almost be certain that a bowl of aromatic garlic fried rice will be part of the spread. It pairs wonderfully with other Filipino dishes, enhancing their flavors and making every meal a little more special.
Now, let’s get cooking!
Garlic Rice (Sinangag)
Ingredients:
- 4 cups of day-old rice
- 10-12 cloves of garlic, minced (or as many as you want!)
- 1 tbsp olive oil or oil of choice
- 2 tbsp salted butter
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- Salt to taste
Instructions:
- Fry up your mixed garlic in oil until its nice and brown. Set aside.
- Add in your day-old rice and break apart to get rid of any clumps.
- Toss in your cooked garlic. Add in garlic powder, salted butter. Stir until well combined. Add in salt to taste.
- Serve hot with your favorite main dish, or enjoy it on its own. We like to pair ours with tuyo (salted dry fish), kamatis (tomatoes), and eggs! Either way, it’s going to be delicious!
